Why should I study abroad?
The reasons for studying abroad are countless! Learn a new
language. Meet new friends. Expand your cultural awareness.
Build your resume. Gain a unique cultural experience. Learn to
navigate and communicate in a foreign environment. In a global
world, it is important that you develop an international
perspective. Once you have survived and conquered a foreign
culture, excelling in the domestic job market will be a breeze.

Can I go on a study abroad program through another
university?
Although Auburn has over twenty very reputable, unique programs,
you can go on programs sponsored by other universities or
institutions. All non-AU Study Abroad Programs MUST be
pre-approved by AU departments, academic advisors, and OIE
Auburn Abroad in order to receive AU academic credit. Contact
Auburn Abroad for details.

When and how long can I study abroad?
You can study anytime after your freshman year if you are 19
years of age before you depart. When you go abroad and how long
you stay is completely up to you! It is highly advisable to plan
early if you want to study abroad, because it can be more
difficult to find suitable programs once you get into your
upper-level major classes, whereas many programs offer courses
equivalent to AU core classes. Some students do intensive
studies in the summer before the fall semester begins. Others
may choose to study abroad for an entire year. The longer you
stay the greater your exposure to the culture / language will
be. Almost all students wish they could have stayed longer, so
consider a semester or a year program if your course of study
lends itself to the possibility.

If I don't speak a foreign language, can I still study
abroad in a non-English speaking country?
Yes! There are many schools and universities abroad that employ
English speaking teachers and employees. UGA's Office of Int'l
Education maintains a
list of programs in non-English
speaking countries and non-traditional destinations with courses
in English.

How do I decide where to study?
Many people already have an idea of where they would like to go,
but if you don't know, don't worry! (click
here for Selecting a
Program). Consider your personal predilections. Do you prefer
warmer or cooler weather? An English speaking or non-English
speaking environment? Coastal or inland regions? Read up on a
country or region you are interested in. Evaluate your language
skills. Check out different universities and programs that are
available. Some AU departments have programs that they run or
recommend for specific majors. Link for above (Selecting a
Program)

How do I know which classes will transfer back towards my
AU major / minor / electives?
You can discuss the transfer issue with your academic advisor
who will have to pre-approve your proposed program after you
have secured the signatures of the department heads. Once you
have chosen a program, select the courses you intend to take,
and download and fill out the Auburn Abroad packet with Course
Approval form . Make an appointment with the AU Department Heads
for each subject you will take and with your Academic Advisor.
Department Heads approve the individual courses for non-AU
programs, while Program Directors approve AU program courses.

How much will I pay to study abroad?
The amount of money you spend greatly depends on the program you
choose and the length of your stay. The least expensive option
is an AU direct exchange program, because you pay Auburn
tuition, plus housing, meals and other living expenses abroad.
There are even programs that cost less than you pay to attend
Auburn for a semester! Several scholarships and forms of
financial aid are available.

How do I know if the study abroad program I've selected is
good?
The most important thing about a study abroad program is that it
fits your needs. There are several ways to determine the quality
of a study abroad program. Although the advisors in our office
are familiar with many study abroad programs, it is impossible
to know them all. Therefore, we suggest that you call the
program office and ask for the names of past participants who
would be willing to talk to you about their experience with the
program. Also, Auburn Abroad may be able to look in our files of
student comments and put you in touch with AU students who have
studied with your program or lived in your country of interest.
Talking to the people in the program office might help you get a
feel for the people who will be running your program. You should
also verify that your program is through an accredited
university, or that an accredited university will offer a
transcript for your program.
