How to Apply?

2. Examine Your Academic Curriculum

  • Plan Ahead

  • Check with your faculty and academic advisor

    1. Some departments have limits on the number of courses taken outside the university that can be applied to your major or minor classes

    2. Discuss graduation requirements, courses, and other concerns

  • Decide what classes (whether core or curriculum) you can take abroad

3. Research and Compare Study abroad Programs

Note: Auburn students can go on non-AU study abroad trips

4. Contact Program Director

  • Request program materials specific to your term of interest

  • Ask about costs, credits, transcripts, flight reservations, program dates, etc.

5. Select a Program

  • Read Selecting a Program
  • Prioritize housing situation, costs, courses offered, location, etc.
  • If possible, speak with former participants of the program you considered
  • Speak with a study abroad advisor if you are having trouble choosing

6. Application and Paperwork

  • Remember, there are application deadlines so plan ahead
  • AU DEADLINES and TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: PASSPORTS & VISA'S
  • Find out what is required for the program you choose (e.g. recommendations, references, forms, etc.)
  • If you will need an AU transcript, request one If a forms needs to be filled out by a study abroad advisor, make an appointment
  • OIE Auburn Abroad has forms (packet contains Forms A-H) that must be completely filled out before departure.   

7. Complete all Student Auburn Abroad forms (A-H).

8. Special Instructions for completing Course Approval form (B)

  • This form is essential for all students studying abroad with an AU or Non-AU programs
  • Any courses that have not been pre-approved on this form may not transfer back as AU credit
  • Indicate the minimum number of hours your will be taking abroad
  • Courses are approved departmentally (i.e. AU Management department will approve management classes abroad. Be sure to provide the departments with program course descriptions to ensure an accurate equivalent is found
  • Courses should be approved by your major/academic advisor. It is their decision as to whether you receive AU credit for the courses.
  • Getting courses to come back in as pass/fail (satisfactory/unsatisfactory), should be discussed and approved prior to studying abroad
  • Secure the signature of your academic dean and return the completed form to OIE Study Abroad
