Preparing for Departure
Civil and Legal Matters
- Absentee Voting - U.S.
Check on registration and absentee ballot restrictions before you leave.
- Income Taxes
IRS regulations allow individuals who are abroad to request an extension of the deadline or you may be able to get a Form 1040 from the U.S. consulate.
- U.S. Customs and Duties
Save receipts for purchases made overseas – you may be able to get reimbursed for taxes paid (VAT). Currently, you can bring $800.00 in gifts or souvenirs duty free.
- Drinking, Drugs, and Sexual Harassment Abroad
Penalties for excessive drinking, drug use, and sexual harassment can be severe and, remember, you are subject to the laws of the host country you are visiting. If legal counsel is needed, you will be responsible for paying the costs
within the host country and from the U. S. For more information check out the
Department of State website. The Auburn University Safe Harbor site also provides assistance in the case of Sexual Harassment or Assault.
