INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPLETING AN I-20 NON-DEGREE/CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
STUDENT/PARTICIPANT REQUEST Download this page and accompanying Data form 1. The primary purpose of the I-20 F-1 program is to foster international exchanges, study and participation in special educational activities therefore the invited individual should be (but nor required) affiliated in some manner with an institution, employer or organization abroad in their home country. The STUDENT MUST PROVE INTENT TO RETURN HOME and NOT BE INTENDING TO CHANGE TO H-1B OR IN APPLYING FOR PERMANENT RESIDENCY. For further information on the appropriate immigration status for your given circumstances please contact Sue Ann Balch, AU OIE Assistant Director Immigration Compliance, at balchsa@auburn.edu. 2. Request that the proposed student completed the form attached to this document and return a signed version. (OIE will accept a faxed version, with the original being returned via mail or upon arrival) 3. Have STUDENT/PARTICIPANT provide a copy of the passport for the proposed F-1 and all accompanying dependents (F-2’s). We must use the full legal name as it appears on the passport. If the proposed student does not have a passport, ask the student to secure a passport prior to applying for the I-20. If the I-20 is required to secure the passport please have the proposed student provide a copy of a TYPED application for the passport along with this form. 4. Please read the form carefully as there are attachments that the student must submit (passport copies, previous US immigration documentation, etc..). Additionally please attach copies of program flyers, letters of invitation and or other descriptions of the proposed activities (ex: coursework, research, clinical practice, etc..) for the student. The letter/documentation should include any details regarding the nature of the activities (research, teaching, etc.) funding offered, office space, access to research facilities, etc. NOTE: OIE must have a written narrative describing the program and activities of the student/participant attached to this request. 5. Following arrival the host is responsible for ensuring that the student/participant checks in with OIE within five business days. This includes ensuring that the new student/participant participates in an orientation session (there is one session every week), that the student/participant is appropriately covered under the AU International Student and Scholar Health Insurance program, and that the student/participant follows all AU rules and regulations. 6. The host is responsible for ensuring that OIE is notified of any changes in the student program such as early departure from the AU activities as well as change in program as originally identified. 7. The student/participant is responsible for notifying OIE of all local address information as well as any changes in such address. Changes must be reported within 10 days of the change or the student is out of status. 8. The applicant must complete the following application materials for admission to A:

b. For Graduate admissions – 1. For Graduate Studies Non Degree go to: http://www.grad.auburn.edu/ select prospective student – application for admission and select the Graduate Studies Non Degree category for admission on the application process, submit the application and email your host to indicate you have applied online. 2. Graduate Transient admission: If enrolled in an institution abroad and you will be receiving graduate credit upon return to your home institution: go to the following online web site and complete the forms as transient graduate students http://www.grad.auburn.edu/forms/graduate_transient_begin.html 3. Submit the application online and email your host to indicate you have applied online. c. Veterinary Externship students from OUTSIDE THE US - please contact the College of Veterinary Medicine - phone 334-844-2685 Fax 334-844-2723 email: storyka@auburn.edu for the correct application form d. Rural Studio Program students from outside the US – Please contact College of Architecture, Design & Construction, Melissa Denney at dennemf@auburn.edu , (334) 844-5426 for admissions procedures. d. ALL STUDENTS MUST ALSO COMPLETE THE AU MEDICAL INFORMATION form: http://web6.duc.auburn.edu/au_medical/med_info.pdf - This form must be completed and submitted prior to enrollment. If you are NOT currently an enrolled student in a foreign institution or do not qualify under the descriptions above please contact OIE – intledu@auburn.edu for additional assistance.
10. Finally we need to have a copy of the student passport photo/data page attached to the application materials to be sure we get the names, DOB, etc. correct. 11. A copy of any financial/fee arrangements – reciprocity arrangement must be included with this request or all participants will be expected to pay full tuition and fees upon arrival. 12. ALL STUDENTS/PARTICIPANTS ADMITTED UNDER THIS PROGRAM MUST BE ADMITTED AS STUDENTS/PARTICIPANTS TO AUBURN UNIVERSITY AND MUST BE APPROPRIATELY ENROLLED. 13. Note that all F/J status applicants will be required to pay the US DHS SEVIS fee directly to the USDHS at https://www.fmjfee.com/index.jhtml prior to applying for a visa but after receiving their SEVIS I-20. 14. AU faculty and staff sponsoring students under this request should begin the process at a minimum of 3 months prior to the projected start date however it is preferred that the process be initiated 6 months in advance. DEPARTMENTAL PROCESSING: Departments processing an I-20 request for short term programs under special circumstances should contact the Office of International Education for further information.
