International Mayors Visit Auburn

Auburn University will play host to mayors from South Korea and Brazil this week in meetings designed to help further Auburn's goals of internationalization.

Mayor Woo-chul Shin of Wando County, South Korea, along with his delegation, will explore collaborations between Auburn's School of Fisheries and Allied Aquaculture and the Wando government on aquaculture-based development around the world. Wando is the heart of abalone production in Korea and a center for other marine culture.

Vice Mayor Celia Oliveira of Salvador, Brazil, represents an area of Brazil where Auburn is establishing a stronger presence to attract students and scholars to Auburn programs. Industries similar to those found in Alabama are locating manufacturing capacity in northeastern Brazil, creating many collaboration opportunities in supply chain logistics and similar economic development challenges.

Both government officials will meet with faculty and students from or interested in their home regions. Shin and Oliveira will meet Wednesday with Auburn's mayor pro tem Ron Anders in a meeting facilitated by the Office of International Programs.
