Year of East Asia

About the Program

Economic powerhouses. Historic cultural centers. Worldwide game changers. The countries of East Asia impact everything from business and education to music and cuisine across the world. In 2012, Auburn will celebrate the cultures and contributions of East Asian nations through the Year of East Asia program.

"A Little Lunch Music" at The Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art will feature international award-winning pianist Tzu-yi Chen. The program is sponsored by Charles and Melanie Wright. Korean Diplomat to Visit Campus - Time TBA
The Honorable He Beom Kim, Consul General of Korea in Atlanta, will visit campus Monday, March 26. His visit will be the latest in a series of visits from international dignitaries and is part of a strategic plan to enhance education by bringing international experiences to students. During his visit, the Consul General will speak to classes and meet with students, faculty and administrators. Those interested in meeting with Consul General Kim should contact Debbie Knight at debbie@auburn.edu or 844-7076.

Chinese Club Lecture and Performance - Lecture at 7 p.m. - Performance at 8 p.m.
Psychology graduate student Ning Hou will highlight famous psychological experiments about cross-cultural cognitive differences between Asians and Westerners. Huanjiao Dong will give a live PIPA show. PIPA is a Chinese traditional music instrument, popular not only in China, but also in almost all of east Asia, especially Japan.
Both events will be held in the Student Center 2326.

East Asia Lecture Series Presents Ms. Kim Phuc Phan Thi - Reception at 6 p.m. - Lecture at 7 p.m.
Kim Phuc Phan Thi was the subject of the chilling Vietnam War photograph showing a young girl running away from a napalm attack. She now works worldwide to heal the wounds of war by helping children in war-torn regions. For more information about this speaker, please visit www.apbspeakers.com.
The reception will be held in Langdon Hall Courtyard, and the lecture will be held in Langdon Hall.

Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art - Fukushima Hula Girls, Japan, NR, directed by Masaki Kobayashi
A story of survival and optimism, this documentary follows a group of hula dancers striving to re-open a resort closed by Japan's devastating 2011 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis. *This screening is sponsored by the Consulate General of Japan in Atlanta.

Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art - Eat Drink Man Woman, Taiwan, PG-13, directed by Ang Lee
Renowned chef Chu (Sihung Lung) is a widower living with his three grown daughters. He struggles to strengthen their family ties while dealing with their romantic pursuits, their professional success, and their struggle for independence in this sentimental look at a modern Chinese family.

Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art - Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, South Korea, R, directed by Chan-wook Park
RYU (SHIN Ha-kyun), a young factory worker, has recently quit art school in order to look after his sister, who is dying a slow, agonizing death for want of a kidney. When a doctor tells Ryu that he is an unsuitable donor and that the chances of finding one are slim, Ryu turns to the black market.

Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art - In the Mood for Love, Hong Kong, PG, directed by Wong Kar-Wai
Chow (Tony Ieung Chu-wai) and Li-zhen (Maggie Cheung Man-yuk) become more than friends when they realize that their spouses are having an affair. Modish costumes, lavish sets, and rich moody lighting set the tone for this stylish drama that takes place in Hong Kong in the ’60s.
