- Abstract:

The land stewardship map of Alabama is a digital geo-database containing land parcel boundaries of public land ownership and voluntarily provided private conservation lands. Each land parcel is attributed with the parcel's name, owner, manager(s), a management description, GAP management status, and supplemental information relevant to performing a gap analysis. The GAP management status assigned to each parcel is based on the current National GAP protection level categories which provide a measure of intended management commitment to long-term biodiversity conservation. The spatial extent for this map is the state of Alabama however this map is also part of a larger regional map spanning a nine state area within the Southeastern United States. The map was developed as part of a cooperative effort among three mapping groups working in collaboration as the Southeast Gap Analysis Project (SEGAP), those groups included the Alabama Gap Analysis Project (AL-GAP), Alabama Cooperative Fish & Wildlife Research Unit, Auburn University, AL; Biological and Spatial Information Center (BaSIC), North Carolina State University, NC; and the Natural Resources Spatial Analysis Laboratory (NARSAL), Institute of Ecology, University of Georgia, GA.
- Purpose:
-
This map was developed as part of the Southeast Gap Analysis Project (SEGAP) to identify conservation lands throughout the Southeast. It was created to provide a foundation to assess the land management status of biodiversity. When the Stewardship map is combined with other GAP data sets, a gap analysis can be performed to depict the extent of which the mapped distribution of terrestrial vertebrates or vegetative land cover is managed primarily for conservation purposes. The analysis will also identify where there are conservation gaps in those components representations within the state of Alabama.
- Supplemental_Information:
-
The map was developed as part of a cooperative effort among three mapping groups working in collaboration as the SEGAP. Mapping work was performed by the Alabama Gap Analysis Project (AL-GAP), Alabama Cooperative Fish & Wildlife Research Unit, Auburn University, AL; Biological and Spatial Information Center (BaSIC), North Carolina State University, NC; and the Natural Resources Spatial Analysis Laboratory (NARSAL), Institute of Ecology, University of Georgia, GA. For the extent of Alabama, AL-GAP compiled stewardship data and performed mapping work for all state and local level governments, non-government organization, and privately owned lands and BaSIC mapped all federal government level and native land holdings.

Map Development: The AL-GAP land stewardship map was created following methods described in the GAP Analysis Handbook (Crist 2000). Digital boundaries of land parcels were obtained from state and federal agencies through cooperative arrangements, and private landowners and conservation land institutes through voluntary data share agreements. Each land parcel was attributed with the parcel's name, owner, manager(s), a management description, GAP management status, and supplemental information relevant to performing a gap analysis. The GAP management status assigned to each parcel was based on the current National GAP protection level categories (Crist 2000) which provide a measure of intended management commitment to long-term biodiversity conservation. All land parcel boundaries were maintained within an ESRI ArcGIS (v9.1) geodatabase. Topological rules were created within the geodatabase and all land parcel boundaries were "snapped" and "cleaned" to the state bounding extent and an internal water boundary generated from the National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD 2001). Further information on these methods and the AL-GAP land stewardship map can be found in Silvano et al. (2008).
