Abstract:
This 71 class land cover map was created as part of the Southeast Regional Gap Analysis Project (SEGAP) and contains both vegetative and non-vegetative classes. Non-vegetative classes are described as water, barren, and/or anthropogenically disturbed, where as vegetative classes are mapped to NatureServe's Terrestrial Ecological Systems, defined in Comer et al. (2003). The spatial extent for this map is the state of Alabama however this map is also part of a larger regional map throughout a nine state area within the Southeastern United States. The map was developed as part of a cooperative effort among three mapping groups working in collaboration as the SEGAP. The mapping work was performed by the Alabama Gap Analysis Project (AL-GAP), Alabama Cooperative Fish & Wildlife Research Unit, Auburn University, AL; Biological and Spatial Information Center (BaSIC), North Carolina State University, NC; and the Natural Resources Spatial Analysis Laboratory (NARSAL), Institute of Ecology, University of Georgia, GA. The source data for this map is Enhanced Thermatic Mapper Plus (ETM+) satellite imagery which was refined using multiple classification techniques in association with various ancillary datasets. An accuracy assessment is currently underway.
Purpose:
This map was created as part of the Southeast Regional Gap Analysis Project (SEGAP) to identify available habitat for vertebrate species. It provides a foundation to develop predicted distribution maps for vertebrate species as well as to facilitate biodiversity assessments within the SEGAP mapping extent.
Supplemental_Information:
The map was developed as part of a cooperative effort among three mapping groups working in collaboration as the SE-GAP. The mapping work was performed by the Alabama Gap Analysis Project (AL-GAP), Alabama Cooperative Fish & Wildlife Research Unit, Auburn University, AL; Biological and Spatial Information Center (BaSIC), North Carolina State University, NC; and the Natural Resources Spatial Analysis Laboratory (NARSAL), Institute of Ecology, University of Georgia, GA. AL-GAP performed mapping in the Southeastern Plains and Southern Coastal Plain physiographic provinces, BaSIC mapped Ridge and Valley, Southwestern Appalachians, and Interior Plateau, and NARSAL was responsible for the Piedmont region mapping. The spatial extent for the above noted physiographic provinces are defined by the Environmental Protection Agencies Level IV Ecoregions of Alabama (Griffith et al. 2001). Processing steps in this metadata outline the general mapping procedure used for all physiographic provinces found within the state of Alabama. Further information regarding class definitions, methods, and accuracy assessments for the Southeastern Plains and Southern Coastal Plain can be found in Silvano et al. (2008). Methods for the remaining provinces are described in McKerrow et al. (2008).

The source imagery was obtained from EROS Data Center (EDC) through the Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics (MRLC) program. EDC claims subpixel accuracy so maximum positional error is 30 meters. Neither AL-GAP nor either cooperating mapping group performed further georectification of the data.

INITIAL CATEGORICAL AND REGRESSION TREE (CART) MODEL. In each Ecoregional Subset, an initial CART model was created and the decision tree was assessed by looking at crossvalidation accuracy, whether decision nodes in the tree were reasonable, and in some cases the resulting spatial distribution. If the model was acceptable it was used to map Ecological Systems in it's respective Ecoregional Subset and incorporated into the final map.

INDIVIDUAL ECOLOGICAL SYSTEM CLASSIFICATIONS. When a spatial query was unsuccessful in mapping an Ecological System, the class was mapped separately from all others. This was performed by initially delineating an Ecological System range. Then, either supervised or unsupervised classifications were performed to produce a potential class map. This was then refined iteratively through on or more of the following methods: patch delineation using the software package eCognition (version 4.0, Definiens Inc.) , patch selection, additional spatial querying, and/or manual editing.

The attribute MAPUNITNAME identifies the name of the class or Ecological System. Because Ecological Systems partially define climax and/or historical vegetation, modifications of these have been created and mapped. Any Ecological System with the word MODIFIER in its name has been modified to better reflect current vegetation. For example, in the Coastal Plain there is an 'East Gulf Coastal Plain Longleaf Pine Woodland' and an 'East Gulf Coastal Plain Longleaf Pine Woodland - Loblolly Pine Modifier'. The first class is mapping actual longleaf, but since so much historical longleaf has been converted to loblolly, the latter class was created.
