Foreword

In a collaborative venture, the College of Education at Auburn University, under the leadership of Dr. Richard Kunkel, Dean and the Alabama State Department of Education, headed by Dr. Ed Richardson, State Superintendent of Schools set forth to create a training model for aspiring and practicing leaders on the skills and attitudes necessary for collaborative leadership.

This module is built around the skills and competencies required for certification of school administrators as set forth by the Alabama Department of Education (“A” and “AA” certificates), NCATE(National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education) , and ISLLC (Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium).

This module can be used as a stand-alone hard copy document or can be accessed through the Internet. The distance learning format is “housed” in the Truman Pierce Institute at Auburn University under the direction of Dr. Frances Kochan

This instructional module is built upon the following set of dispositions or beliefs:

  • Schools operate as an integral part of a larger community,
  • Everyone is responsible for student success,
  • Families, staff, and the community must be in communication for collaboration to be successful,
  • Educational excellence requires diverse ideas, values, and cultures.
