REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION TO THE TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM

Any student in the College of Education desiring to major in one or more of the certifiable teaching fields must meet the requirements for formal admission into the Teacher Education Program. The student should begin meeting these requirements prior to becoming a Junior. It is to the student's advantage to fulfill the requirements as soon as possible since admission to the Teacher Education Program is prerequisite to most of the foundations and professional courses required in the teacher preparation curriculum.

There are six admission criteria (as above). The first five may be accomplished in any order. The sixth (which is an interview with the appropriate department) cannot be scheduled until all others have been met.

As soon as a student has completed forty-five semester hours of course work, he/she should go to 3464 Haley Center to make formal application. Students should pursue each of the criteria until they have all been accomplished. When the first five items have been reported to the Teacher Education Evaluator in charge of the admission procedure, the student must ask the Evaluator to prepare his/her folder for the interview. Due to new State Department regulations that require an evaluation at this time, at least two work days should be allowed for the Evaluator to prepare the folder for an interview.

After the student has been interviewed, the committee sends the folder and their recommendation back to the Evaluator. The student will receive written notification of the decision about admission. The three possible decisions are "admit", "reject", or "defer."
