Bioptic Driving
by Beth Raspberry

Abstract

The purpose of my project is to prepare a presentation for VRB counselors focusing on the general information about bioptic lens. “Bioptic Driving” means operating an automobile with the assistance of specialized telescopic/bioptic eyewear. The guidelines are very new in the State of Mississippi and certain guidelines have to be followed by the eligible visually impaired consumers. It is important for all counselors to understand what Bioptic lens are and how to assist the consumer in becoming independent behind the wheel of a car once again. It is my goal to present information about Bioptic lens and the qualifications needed in order to obtain an MS Driver’s license.

Bioptic lens help visually impaired driver’s drive independently once again. This helps them in driving themselves to and from work as well as to any appointments, shopping, etc. that they have to do. If a consumer once drove and lost their vision and had to give up their license, the loss of independence is traumatic. This sometimes brings an array of additional feelings in addition to their vision loss. It affects their entire family and friends. Getting your independence back through the use of Bioptic lens really helps boost the disabled consumer. It helps them get back to work, earn wages and become independent and this is what Vocational Rehabilitation is all about! Helping Mississippians Help Themselves!!!

This project took me about 40 hours to complete. After talking with Dr. Hampton at Memphis Low Vision clinic, a lot of questions were answered.  I also talked with Major Jenkins at the Mississippi Highway Patrol in Mississippi and he states there have only been a few consumers who have successfully obtained their license using their Bioptic lens. A power point presentation was designed to help compile information about Bioptic lens so VRB counselors employed by The Department of Rehabilitation Services would see the presentation and become more knowledgeable of the new guidelines and low vision aids available to visually impaired consumers.  This project should assist counselors in helping eligible visually impaired consumers obtain their license so they can maintain or regain employment.
