Vocational Exploration for Veterans
by Jamie Barrington

Abstract

Developed for the Alabama Department of Veteran's Affairs. A formalized vocational exploration process which veterans follow to assist them in choosing a suitable employment goal. Due to an apparent increase in unsuccessful case closures among veterans seeking employment, a need was identified for a stronger focus on employment and required vocational exploration prior to the selection of an employment goal.

This project structured the exploration process, including developing a mandatory "Job Lab." Participants complete several worksheets and goals exercises, attend an orientation addressing suitable employment, watch informational videos, and are administered a battery of assessments. Each participant completes a "Job Seeker Notebook" and has the opportunity to work in a group with other seekers. A Rehabilitation Counselor reviews stated goals and organizes follow-up appointments.
