"CCCAPS FOR SALE"
Reading With Expression
Composed By:Amberlyn Francis

Rationale: To have the ability to read with fluency one must have the skills of word recognition and speed. When fluency is attained a child can then begin to focus reading with expression. As they begin to read with expression they find that reading is no longer a chore for them but an adventure. To help students master the skill of reading teacher will model this behavior for the class when participating in Shared Reading exercises and the students will work with small groups to help each other learn how to read with expression.
Materials:
-"Caps For Sale" By: Esphyr Slobodkina (Enough copies for
the entire class/ Big Book)
-Chart with various emotion sentences: "You are a wonderful friend!"
"I miss my puppy!"
"I am so mad at my sister!"
- Construction paper squares for each child (colored: Red, Blue, &
Yellow)
Construction Paper
Red-mad
Blue-sad
Yellow-happy
Procedures:
1. "Today boys and girls we are going to read with expression. Remember
when we were having our Shared Reading lesson and we talk about expression?
Do you remember that the tone of your voice helps listeners to know what
is happening in the book?" Let's Read this sentence on the chart
together, "Wow! That is an awesome bike!" (Teacher and
class read together) now let's read this sentence, "I am sorry that
you are moving away." (Teacher and class read together) "Class, did
you hear a difference in these sentences?"
2."As we break up into groups of 4 I want you to think about expression. While you are reading each person will take a turn in reading a page and that person needs to be sure that they read with enthusiasm. In the book "Caps For Sale" there are many different types of emotions. Do you think that a cap salesman would sell a lot of caps if he whispered that he was selling them? So let's make sure that we read with each emotion! If a member of your group is unsure then help them out. When they read a line members who are not reading need to hold up a construction paper square: If the character is happy hold up yellow, if they are sad hold up blue, and if they are mad hold up red. If people hold up more than one color stop and discuss why each person thinks it should be that color"
3. Now, I am going to read a few pages of the book "Caps For Sale". Listen to me as I read and hold up your squares as I read.
4. Pass out the book "Caps For Sale". Now break into your groups and find a corner in the room. I will walking around and holding my squares up with you too. Remember, make it fun for the person listening!"
5. To end let the students rewrite "Caps For Sale" and add in 2 more emotions: such as lonely or frightened.
