1.Introduce the lesson by explaining that we are going to crack the secret code of the alphabet. To do this we have to learn the mouth moves for each letter. Today we are going work on the mouth move /e/. Letâs see if we can spot /e/ in some words.
2.Ask students ãHave you ever heard a door creak? That /e/ sound is the mouth move the short e makes. Letâs all pretend we are opening a creaky door.ä
3.Now we are going to try saying a tongue twister ãTed fed his dog Fred who was sitting on the bed.ä Look at the chart and lets say it together 3 times.
4.Now we are going to practice the letter e. We can use the letter e to make the /e/ sound. To make an e we start at half way between the fence and the sidewalk. Make a straight line then curve up to the fence around, touch the ground and up. Everyone try making one. When I walk around the room show me your e. I want you to make10 eâs just like mine.
5.Now I am going to pass out a card to everyone. The card has the letter e with a picture of a door. I am going to say some words if you hear the /e/ sound raise your card; red, blue, end, Ed, Steve, over, fled, car, ten, cat.
6.Read the story Red Gets Fed and talk about it. Read it a second time and have students hold up their cards when they hear the /e/ sound.
7. For assessment, pas out a picture page and help students name the pictures. Have students circle pictures with /e/ sound in them.
