The Horse from Llanes

horse

The "asturcon" is one of the oldest and purest of all the breeds of horses in the world. There are historical references dating back 2000 years which mention the breed, but other evidence places the arturcon as far back as 2,800 years ago in this area. During the Midle Ages and continuing until modern day, this horse served as a key component of the economy and defense of the area. They were exported to Ireland in the XV Century and to France more recently. This is a small, tough and healthy beast.

Today the asturcones live free during the entire year. They live in harmony with modernity and often are used to give rides to children and tourists. The horse is ideal for traversing steep trails and hills and its small size makes it ideal for beginners. In Cuanda, a community close to Llanes, there's an association which maintains the geneological record of these horses. The ACPRA certifies all new births and issues markers for the horses
