Proctored Exams
Proctored exams are a service for students and faculty. PSD recruits and trains graduate students to proctor exams.
Proctors are typically arranged by PSD if the exam is scheduled to be given in our office.
A proctored exam is only recommended when
- the student needs to have a reader, writer, or special equipment; and/or
- the instructor or GTA cannot proctor the exam.
It is always preferable for the instructor to provide exam accommodations so the student with a disability has the same
opportunity to clarify information as others in the class. Proctored exams may or may not coincide with class exams,
depending on the availability of proctors. Not all exams can be proctored through the PSD Office
(i.e. Labs, Art History, Foreign Language).
Guidelines for Students
5 Days in Advance
- Obtain a Proctored Exam Request Form from the PSD office in 1244 Haley Center or from the PSD homepage; click on the Documents and Forms link.
- Complete the student section of this form.
- Schedule to meet with the instructor to discuss exam accommodations and have him/her complete the shaded area of the form.
- Bring the form to PSD and meet with the Exam Coordinator to discuss arrangements.
- An email will be sent to confirm arrangements and time of proctored exam.
Exam Day
- Arrive at arranged location on time (5 minutes before the exam is recommended). Being late will result in loss of arrangements.
- Be prepared. The proctor can not answer questions. Breaks are given only when absolutely necessary and are minimal. Exams are timed according to the student's Accommodation Memo. If you arrive late, that time will be deducted from the amount of time you are allowed for the exam.
Problems
- A physician's note is required to verify absence from a proctored exam. The student is expected to call in advance of an absence, so the proctor can be cancelled.
- Proctors are instructed to leave 15 minutes after the scheduled start time if the student has not arrived.
- Exams which are not taken as scheduled will be returned to the instructor who will determine if rescheduling is appropriate. To reschedule the exam, a new Proctored Exam Request Form must be completed with sufficient notice (5 business days).
Guidelines for Faculty
- Upon request, arrange to meet with a student to discuss exam accommodations and complete the shaded area of the proctor request form if you cannot provide the accommodations.
- Arrange exam accommodations in a confidential manner.
- Deliver exams to be proctored in PSD office at least 24 hours in advance of the exam. Alternate format (i.e. braille, large print), - 48 hours.
- If the exam requires an alternate format (i.e. braille, large print, or audio) call 844-2096 to discuss timelines and suggestions for conversion.
- Call 844-2096 if you have questions regarding exams.
It is the instructor's responsibility to deliver the exam to the PSD office prior to the exam date. Exams will not be accepted or returned through campus mail. It is always preferable for the instructor to provide exam accommodations so the student with a disability has the same opportunity to clarify information as others in the class.
Every effort will be made to proctor the exam at the same time of the class exam There may be instances where the student has a class conflict that will not allow for extended time or proctor availability, in this case the exam will be scheduled as close to the class exam as possible. The instructor will be notified in advance of any scheduling changes.
