Ashraf Uddin selected for endowed professorship

Published: 09/08/2020

Congratulations to Ashraf Uddin, Professor and Graduate Program Officer (GPO) in the Department of Geosciences in the College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM), on his selection as the Dr. Robert B. Cook Endowed Professorship effective October 1, 2020.

“Since joining the Department of Geosciences, 21 years ago, I have been very fortunate in keeping up my scholarly productivity in a supportive working environment in the department with colleagues, students, and administrators. I am very thankful and honored for the Robert B. Cook endowed professorship while I specially acknowledge the graduate students, both domestic and international, whom I was able to assist through my administrative role as the GPO, funding support I received from NSF for my research on orogenic sediments, Imperial Barrel Award participating students from this department since 2011, and departmental colleagues and mentors who helped me over the last two decades," said Uddin.

His accomplishments show his impact on a national level.

“Dr. Uddin has made outstanding contribution to the field of sedimentary geology and basin analysis. This is a particularly important area of research because of the tremendous aspects related to regional tectonics and petroleum reservoir potentials. Ashraf initiated Geosciences’ Imperial Barrel Award (IBA) Program to offer life-time experiences for students participating in team work together with industrial mentors.  Auburn Geosciences IBA teams were awarded the third place in the regional competition three years in a row (2018, 2019, and 2020).  In addition to these outstanding contributions in research and mentoring, there are a number of indicators that Dr. Ashraf has successfully established his reputation as a national and international scholar, he was elected to the Fellowship of the Geological Society of America in 2020.  He has served as the President of the Alabama Geological Society and Member‐at‐Large on the Research Grants Committee of the Geological Society of America," explained Ming-kuo Lee, Chair of the Department of Geosciences.
