Monika Raj - Only Researcher in Alabama Named as 2020 Sloan Fellow

Congratulations to Dr. Monika Raj, an assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, on her selection into the prestigious 2020 cohort of Sloan Research Fellows.

According to the Sloan Foundation, “a Sloan Research Fellow is someone whose drive, creativity, and insight makes them some of the most promising young scientists working today.  This year’s recipients were chosen from 60 colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. Each fellow will receive a two-year, $75,000 fellowship which can be spent to advance his or her research.

To receive a Sloan Research Fellowship is to be told by your fellow scientists that you stand out among your peers,” says Adam F. Falk, president of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

“Monika is one of the 23 fellows chosen this year in the field of in chemistry and biochemistry,” explained Dr. Curtis Shannon, Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. “I am pleased to call her a colleague and am excited to see what creative science comes from her lab in the future.”

The Raj Lab focuses on developing new chemical reactions, catalysis and ligation methodologies for synthesis of biological molecules.
