“The new Collaborative Space for Learning encourages students to ask questions, work as a team and develop good study habits explained Dr. Vanessa Falcao, lecturer in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

The new space, located in Extension Hall, brings students together for active learning.

“This room is a flip on traditional office hours,” shared Dr. Rachel Prado, a lecturer in the Department. “Students have an opportunity to review the problems that they are working on and find solutions in a supportive and welcoming environment.”

The room is used for students, faculty meetings and doctoral thesis defense presentations. The tables can be quickly re-configured for different needs.

“The dynamic space promotes interaction among faculty and students,” said Dr. Dave Crisostomo, a lecturer in the Department.

The room has already increased student participation during faculty office hours.

“Before the first exam, we normally do not see many students for office hours,” Dr. Falcao added. “With this room, we are finding that students are immediately asking for help and spending time during office hours to engage with faculty from the very first week of class.”
