COSAM Students, Faculty and Staff Have Fun Kicking Off Geography Awareness Week
Auburn University students enjoyed games, pizza, and even had the chance to fly a drone on Cater Hall Lawn last week.
The Auburn University Geography Student Organization kicked off Geography Awareness Week with an event on November 28 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Geography Awareness Week is an annual celebration of geography. The celebration promotes what geography is, why it is important, and the relevance of a geographic education in preparing students to understand pressing social and environmental issues.
“The event is to raise awareness about geography and our programs in Geosciences as well,” said Geosciences Professor Dr. Adam Payne. “Geography Awareness Week is actually a week that we celebrate every year and is supported by National Council for Geographic Education.”
Dr. Payne offered extra credit to students in his classes for participating in Geography Twister, trivia, map puzzles or a scavenger hunt.
“During the scavenger hunt, they have to walk around using a map and find five different buildings on campus,” said Dr. Payne. “Then you find the orange cone out front and the cones have two outlines of different countries and they try to figure out what the two outlines of countries are. We find that most people and students don’t know the outlines of countries very well, so it makes for some interesting answers when you get them back.”
The event was open to all Auburn students and along with free pizza and games, offered information on geography degrees and career information.
“It’s a fun, yearly event,” Dr. Payne said.
