Liles Laboratory Personnel

Mark Liles

Mark Liles (with orphan flying fox)

Hometown: Fort Smith, AR (among 35 other homes)

Degree obtained: Ph.D. in Microbiology

Research interests: (see also research program page) I've been fortunate to have many different research experiences in my career, including studying the aging of the human retina, the pathogenesis of Legionella pneumophila which causes Legionnaire's Disease, and exploring the functional diversity of microbial life using metagenomics methods. I am very happy that I selected microbiology as a career field, as it is a dynamic and evolving field with many opportunities in both applied and basic science. I have always been very drawn to applied science, as there are so many problems in this world that need to be addressed, but virtually any field of science I can find interesting. I welcome students from diverse backgrounds and with diverse interests and professional directions.

Personal interests:  I love to travel and experience other cultures, some of my favorite trips have been to rainforests and coral reefs. When I get the time to play, my favorite sport is racquetball.  But these days whatever free time I have (what's that?) is happily spent doing whatever my son Max wants to do.
