Greetings! Welcome to Auburn University’s Department of Geosciences web site! We hope that past, present, and potential students, as well as other friends, benefit from the information contained herein.Mark Stelenpohl

Previously distinct units in separate colleges, the departments of Geology and Geography merged to form a single small but vibrant department within the College of Sciences and Mathematics in 1999. The department currently includes 16 faculty members, eleven in Geology and five in Geography, who direct the studies of approximately 100 undergraduate majors and 32 graduate students. We offer BS and MS degrees in Geology and BA and MS degrees in Geography.

Geology faculty, temporarily housed in the Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum, have a broad range of interests and provide instruction and research opportunities for undergraduates and graduates in areas of both traditional and environmental geosciences. Geography faculty, currently housed in Haley Center, also hold diverse interests, providing opportunities for students to specialize in both cultural and physical geography with a strong emphasis on geospatial analysis (GIS and remote sensing). A new building to house all of Geosciences is being planned to open in the Fall of 2019.

Career opportunities in Geology and Geography are diverse and, in recent years, have grown substantially. Departmental alumni are distinguishing themselves in a wide variety of careers in industry, academics, and with governmental agencies. We are proud of their success and grateful for their continuing support that allows the department in various ways to meet the educational needs of our students.

War Eagle!
