Please Welcome Our Advisory Board 

This highly skilled team serves as an advocacy group to further the goals and aims of the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs (ODMA). The main objective of the Advisory Board (Board) is to advocate for initiatives which will assist in the fulfillment of COSAM ODMA's vision to enhance diversity, inclusion, and equity within the College.​ By providing advice and financial assistance, the advisory board, enhances and grows the academic and personal support programs provided by ODMA. Their persistent efforts have aided in the recruitment, retention, and engagement of exceptional undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty and staff from groups traditionally underrepresented in STEM. The Board presents a unified voice to advocate on behalf of the office in matters that directly and indirectly affect diversity within the College, the University, the State and beyond. 




AlexisAl Lugo 

Lieutenant Colonel Alcides “AL” Lugo, Jr hails from Ponce, Puerto Rico, and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant into the United States Army in May 1986 from Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama. He holds a Master Degree in Education in the field of Occupation, Training & Development from the University of Louisville, Kentucky and has completed Post Graduate/Doctoral level work in Foreign International Studies in Human Rights from Oracle University in Bogotá, Columbia. He also holds an undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice in the field of Forensic Science from Jacksonville State University. AL has over 80 months of company command time, serving as a Basic Combat Training Company Commander of A-2/26 Infantry at Fort Dix, New Jersey, Tank Company Commander of B-2/67 Armor, and Commander of Headquarters' of Headquarters Company of 2/67 Armor Battalion in Friedberg, Germany. He has also commanded an Observer Controller Team for Cavalry & Mortar Operations at Fort Knox, Kentucky 1st Readiness Training Brigade. He is a graduate of the resident Command General Staff Officer College at the prestigious Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation at Fort Benning, Georgia. He is a graduate of the Armor Officer Advance Course, Fort Knox, Kentucky, the Air and Ground Operations School at Tindal, Air Force Base, Florida, the 120MM Infantry Mortar Transition Course, Fort Benning, Georgia and the Scout Platoon Leaders Course (SPLC), Fort Knox, Kentucky and the coveted Army Senior Leadership Force Management College, Fort Belvoir, Virginia. His final assignment was as the Team Chief, Team II, Force Development Planning Division, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army G-8 (Pentagon) responsible for new equipment fielding for deploying units assigned to Operation Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom prior to their deployment or their transition into the theater of operations. Lieutenant Colonel Lugo’s Awards include the Legion of Merit, four Meritorious Service Medals, three Army Commendation Medals, four Army Achievement Medals, The Order of Saint George, The National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, The Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, The Armed Forces Reserve Medal, The Armed Forces Service Medal, The Military Outstanding Volunteered Service Medal, The Army Staff Badge, The German Armed Forces Military Physical Proficiency Badge, and the United States Army Physical Fitness Badge. “Scouts Out!”

JohnathanAudrey Goins

Audrey held positions in environmental health and safety at Chevron’s Pascagoula, Mississippi and Richmond, California refineries and in the corporation’s environmental affairs group. She also served as Chevron’s Public Affairs’ liaison with national environmental and consumer affairs organizations and managed the Corporation’s Community Programs’ staff. Following an assignment managing contributions and community development for Chevron’s international external affairs group, she joined Corporate Procurement. She was active in the Company’s Employee Networks. She served on the Executive Committee for the Chevron Women’s Network, was a member of the Boomers Network and also served as Mentoring Officer on the Black Employee Network (BEN) Leadership Team. Ms. Cormier has served on the Board of Directors for the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) - the largest third-party certifier of businesses owned controlled, and operated by women in the United States. She was inducted into the Hall of Fame for this organization on March 23, 2010. Audrey also served as chair of the National Minority Supplier Development Council’s Petrochemical and Energy Industry Group and is a member of the Institute of Supply Management. She was named Corporate Coordinator of the Year and Executive of the Year for the Northern California Supplier Development Council in 2001 and 2007. She served on the Board of Directors for Inner City Advisors - the Bay area-based affiliate of the Harvard Business School’s Initiative for A Competitive Inner City. She also served on the Supply Chain Advisory Committee for Clark Atlanta University – Atlanta Georgia. She was one of the founding Executive Committee members of the Northern California chapter of the Network of Executive Women- a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to attract, retain and advance women in the retail and consumer products industry through education leadership and business development.

NikkiBell Rogers

Bell Rogers was born and raised in Sylacauga, Alabama as the oldest of four children. After high school, Bell decided that she wanted to have a career and life devoted to helping others. Bell decided to attend Clark College in Atlanta, Georgia where she majored in Sociology with plans on becoming a Social Worker because of her desire to help others and serve the community. After attending Clark College, Bell received an opportunity to work for South Central Bell (now AT&T). Bell’s work at South Central Bell was not a job in social work, but it would prove to lead to many years of helping youth and the community. Bell quickly became a member of the AT&T Pioneers, a national service organization within AT&T that services the community in a multitude of ways. As a part of the Pioneers, Bell has been involved in Mentoring Across America Program, Habitat for Humanity including special projects for homes built specifically for the handicapped, Run for Education walk for students, and an Ambassador for Job Shadowing, which is now the Aspire Mentoring Program. Bell's success led to her becoming the State President of the Pioneers in 2002 and 2012. In 2000 near the end of her 35 year career with AT&T, Bell began the process of helping to sponsor students for Auburn University Summer Bridge Program. For the past 17 years Bell has continued to help sponsor students and has become an integral part of the success of the thriving program. Following retirement, Bell also joined the American Business Women Association (ABWA). The mission of the ABWA is to bring together businesswomen of diverse occupations and to provide opportunities for them to help themselves and others grow personally and professionally through leadership, education, networking support and national recognition. Bell has been a member of this national organization for 15 years. The ABWA allows her to give back to the community as she continues to grow professionally and personally while continuing her life goal of helping others. Bell has continued to help serve the community spearheading large scale efforts such as K!dspark which helps to prepare students for then world that is to come by providing them with invaluable tools that will help them be successful throughout their lives. Because of her efforts Bell has received countless awards and recognition for hard work and dedication to helping others.

CharriaCharria Campbell

Charria Campbell is a native of Muscle Shoals, AL. She has been a resident of the Auburn/Opelika area for 18 years. She currently serves as an Advisor/Recruiter and Adjunct Math Instructor for Southern Union State Community College. She was formerly a Coordinator for the Alabama Power Academic Excellence Program (AEP) in the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering, a mathematics teacher at Loachapoka High School, and a former Diversity Initiatives Coordinator for the Office of Inclusion and Diversity. As a Diversity Initiatives Coordinator, she was the coordinator for the Provost Leadership Undergraduate Scholars (PLUS) Program and the Summer Enrichment Experience (S.E.E. Auburn) Program, a recruiter, and she assisted with the Auburn University College Prep (AUCAP) Program for Loachapoka High School. She was also a Minority Programs Coordinator for the College of Sciences and Mathematics at Auburn University where she advised and mentored students, helped to coordinate the College’s Summer Bridge Program, and recruited minority students to Auburn who were interested in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. She has been a tutor for mathematics for many years and has been tutoring and working with the ACT for over 5 years. Charria volunteers with several local organizations and is very involved with her sorority and church family. She holds a Bachelor’s of Chemical Engineering from Auburn University and a Masters’ of Education in Secondary Mathematics from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

It is not just the acceptance of others but it is also respecting someone for who they are, where they are, and what they believe."



CarlosHerman Turner

Dr. Herman Turner Jr., born and raised in Selma, AL, earned a biomedical sciences degree from Auburn University. While at Auburn, Dr. Turner was involved as College of Science and Mathematics ambassador, student assistant for the men’s basketball team, member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., and several other organizations. After Auburn, Dr. Turner attended physical therapy school at Alabama State University, where he earned a doctorate of physical therapy degree. At ASU, he was awarded the American Physical Therapy Association’s Minority Award for Academic Excellence and presented a research study, “Stroke and Cardiovascular Disease in College-Aged Males.” Today, Dr. Turner lives in Birmingham, Alabama, working as physical therapist whom recently established Turner Physical Therapy Consultants, LLC. Dr. Turner enjoys being around family/friends, reading, running marathons, world travel, and working with Selma’s youth through Selma Bridge Builders Inc. non-profit.

brittanyKristy Lee Scott 

Kristy Lee is an advocate for academic transformation. With a career goal of creating innovative programming to enhance students’ collegiate experience, she has devoted her years in higher education to that mission. With a B.S. in Microbiology from Auburn University and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Alabama, the former school teacher, developmental instructor, and recruitment/retention counselor has gracefully stepped outside of her Birmingham, Alabama roots to expand the world of the students she's impacted. Her current role in higher education administration allows her to be a part of the decision making process that influences the college experience of her institution’s students.

AlisaVincet Ortiz

J. V. Ortiz was born in Bethpage, New York in 1956 and attended public schools in Plainview, New York until 1973. After obtaining a B.S. in Chemistry with High Honors at the University of Florida in 1976, he began graduate work in the Quantum Theory Project of the same university and completed his dissertation in 1981 under the supervision of Yngve Öhrn, earning a Ph.D. in Chemistry with a certificate in Chemical Physics. After two years as a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University with William Lipscomb and at Cornell University with Roald Hoffman, he spent thirteen years at the University of New Mexico. In December, 1996, he joined the Chemistry Department of Kansas State University and was named a University Distinguished Professor in April, 2004. He became the first Ruth W. Molette Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Auburn University in August, 2006 and simultaneously began serving as Chairman of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. His second, four-year term ended in August, 2014. Dr. Ortiz has taught a variety of topics, from basic chemistry for nontechnical majors to advanced methods of quantum mechanics. He supervises a research group of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows that specializes in his area of research, quantum chemistry. Professor Ortiz has published more than 230 papers in scientific journals, has delivered over 210 invited lectures, is among the authors of the widely used Gaussian quantum chemistry packages, has served on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Chemical Physics and the International Journal of Quantum Chemistry and is a consultant to federal agencies, historically black colleges and universities, Hispanic-serving institutions and private research organizations. He is a member of the American Chemical Society (ACS), the American Physical Society, the International Society for Theoretical Chemical Physics, the World Association of Theoretically Oriented Chemists, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the American Association of University Professors and the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE), was elected to a three-year term on the Executive Board of NOBCChE as Director-At-Large in 2016. He also received the Stone Award of the Carolina-Piedmont Section of the ACS for the most outstanding chemist in the southeastern United States, and was elected a Fellow of AAAS in 2017.

Leadership in discovery is often personified by individuals who have a different perspective, an alternative way of thinking or experiences of life that differ from those of the majority.  Institutions of science and education benefit from vigorous policies of inclusion that develop diverse talents for the benefit of all."
