| Dr. Karen Rabren |
Karen Rabren has devoted much of her career to research and outreach in the realm of “transition,” which focuses on the preparation of youth and young adults with disabilities to realize goals associated with education, employment and independent living.
Later this month, Rabren will be recognized for her role in helping special education teachers better understand the needs of their students.
Rabren, director of the Auburn Transition Leadership Institute and a professor in the College of Education's Department of Special Education, Rehabilitation and Counseling, will receive the 2012 Jasper Harvey Award for Outstanding Teacher Educator in Special Education. The award is presented by the Alabama Council for Exceptional Children.
Rabren will be honored during the Alabama State Department of Education’s MEGA Conference in Mobile on July 17. She was nominated for the Jasper Harvey Award by Saraland High School special education teacher Stephanie Zito Smith `01, who earned bachelor’s and doctoral degrees in special education from the College of Education.
Rabren, a two-time College of Education graduate, has served as a faculty member since 2000. Her research primarily focuses on post-school outcomes for students with disabilities, as well as the conceptualization, implementation and evaluation of transition programs.
