Truman Pierce Institute hosts LAN Winter Conference

U.S. Rep. Artur Davis will be the keynote speaker at the Leadership in Action Network Winter Conference organized by the Auburn University College of Education's Truman Pierce Institute.

Davis, who represents Alabama's Seventh Congressional District and serves on the U.S. House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee, will speak at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 25, when the conference begins at Tuskegee University's Kellogg Hotel & Conference Center. The theme for the two-day event is "Leadership: Climate, Culture and Drivers of Change.''

The conference is being hosted as part of the Leadership in Action Network (LAN), a Truman Pierce Institute initiative involving eight of Alabama's rural school districts - Bullock County, Dallas County, Hale County, Macon County, Monroe County, Sumter County, Tallapoosa County and Lee County. During the winter conference, administrators, teachers and student leaders will have an opportunity to interact and learn from each other, as well as a number of guest speakers, in sessions entitled, "Drivers of Change in Our Current Education, Political and Economic Climate,'' and "Drivers of Change: Professionalism, Future Trends & Student Engagement.'' The Leadership in Action Network program is funded by the Jessie Ball duPont Fund externalweb and is in its third year of operation.

The focal points of the conference include growth of leadership and action research skills for student leaders in grades 5-12, professional growth and planning for educators, networking and idea exchanges for administrators and the support and sustainment of educational renewal efforts at the school, county and district levels. Participants will engage in forums to identify barriers to effective learning and teaching and identify strategies for overcoming those barriers.

The list of guest speakers includes four faculty members from the College of Education's Department of Educational Foundations, Leadership and Technology - Dr. Cindy Reed, professor and director of the Truman Pierce Institute; Dr. Margaret Ross, associate professor; Dr. Jeffrey Brooks, associate professor; and Dr. Lisa Kensler, assistant professor and Stacy Danley, athletic director for Tuskegee University.Other presenters and facilitators include TPI staff members Audrey Phillips, conference coordinator and graduate assistant; Chris Groccia,administrator II of academic programs; Sheila Moore, graduate assistant; and Linxiang Zhu, graduate research assistant.
