As part of a comprehensive initiative coordinated by AU Outreach, the Truman Pierce Institute is leading the way with LEAD activities. Loachapoka Exploring Auburn Days (LEAD) are opportunities for eleventh and twelfth grade students at Loachapoka High School to spend time on Auburn University’s campus in an effort to learn about college and career readiness. Annual one-day events and a week-long residential summer camp are hosted by TPI on the AU campus.
One-Day Events
Two one-day events are held each spring and fall. Last spring’s events were held on April 9, 2010, 32 Loachapoka seniors participated in a variety of college awareness activities, and on April 28,, 2010 with 27 senior participants. At these events students engage in team-building exercises, communication development sessions and skill-building activities (for example, priority setting). Students also attend presentations conducted by AU students and professionals about student life, admissions and financial aid processes, and have opportunities to tour different colleges on campus to learn about what’s offered in regard to majors and programs.
In Fall 2010, there were two events hosted for the year’s senior class. The first was held on November 12, 2010 with 22 students in attendance. The second event was held on November 17, 2010 with 27 student participants. Self-awareness and goal setting activities were offered to the Loachapoka students as well as informational sessions on the following topics: college and career readiness, understanding admissions/financial aid processes and deadlines, and the diverse opportunities available through attending college.
Spring 2011, TPI hosted two college visit days for the year’s eleventh grade class at Loachapoka on April 7th and 20th. Students were treated to a residence hall tour, opportunities to explore college majors, team building activities, and lunch in campus dining facilities.
Summer Camps
There were 12 participants from Loachapoka High School at the 2010 summer camp. This week-long residential camp was provided at no cost to the students thanks to funding provided by AU Outreach. Throughout the week, students engaged in hands-on activities designed to improve academic, organizational, and leadership skills while immersing themselves in college-like opportunities. Improving writing skills and advancing knowledge of college admissions requirements were important goals for the camp. The 2011 summer camp will be held from June 19 until June 24, 2011 and is open to rising ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth graders at Loachapoka High School. The camp is free of charge for the first 30 campers who register and meet program requirements. To learn more about the camp or to register, go to:
