Assistive Technology and Innovation

The Assistive Technology and Innovation (ATI) unit, in collaboration with the Department of Industrial Design and the Department of Special Education, Counseling, and Rehabilitation (SERC); partners with individuals, parents, and service practitioners to create innovative technology through universal design. The ATI unit is best known as one of the pioneers in developing Apple iPad applications as assistive technology for persons with disabilities across the lifespan. The unit also provides demonstrations, consultations, and assessments to the community. Each year the ATI unit hosts the Alabama Assistive Technology Expo and Conference (ALATEC) which links consumers and services providers to the state-of-the-art products and the latest information in assistive technology. Presently, the ATI unit is developing a Graduate Certificate program for teachers, rehabilitation counselors and other social service professionals.
