Working in collaboration, the College of Education and the Office of University Outreach at Auburn University and the College of Education at Korea University in Seoul, Korea, the Global Studies Initiative in Education: South Korea Program was developed by Drs. John Dagley and Suhyun Suh. The faculty made an initiation visit to Korea to teach a summer course, Seminar in Career Development Theory and Research, offered within the School Counseling program at the College of Education in Korea University in June- July, 2008. The program was further developed by having a group of Korea University School Counseling program students led by Dr. Sang Min Lee visited in Auburn in the following summer of 2009. During this time, the Korean students were exposed to Auburn and American culture and local k-12 school counseling programs while gaining counseling knowledge and skills by taking a Counseling Skills course co-taught by Drs. Dagley and Suh.
In 2010 summer, three School Counseling program master’s students at Auburn University joined Korea University School Counseling program students at Korea University. The program featured an educational and cultural tour of Korea and China in addition to participating in a jointly designed graduate-level course: Special Topics in School Counseling. The course was taught by Drs. Sang Min Lee and Suhyun Suh and was developed to increase student’s self-awareness as a cultural being and increase their multicultural counseling knowledge and skills in working with k-12 students from diverse cultures ($25,000 funded by the College of Education and the Office of University Outreach at Auburn University). Global Studies Initiative in Education: South Korea Program
The Global Studies Initiative in Graduate Study: South Korea program is a large collaboration between Korean automaker AJIN-USA, Auburn/Opelika area schools, the Office of University Outreach, and the College of Education in Auburn University. The recent rise of Korean automakers in the Auburn-Opelika area has increased the localization of Korean employees and their families, often with school age children, into Auburn and Opelika. As a result, the enrollments of non-English speaking Korean students continue to increase in Auburn-Opelika city schools.
This program is developed to provide local educators with an opportunity to visit Korea to learn about the Korean school system, educational expectations for students at each level of schooling, Korean history, culture, economy, politics, Korean cultural traditions, holiday celebrations, etc. These first hand experiences will help the educators better understand Korean students’ and parents’ needs and serve them with heightened cultural sensitivity. The 16 day trip includes diverse activities such as pre-departure orientations, attending lectures at Ewha Woman’s University, k-12 school visitations and observation, forum with Korean educators, historical site visits, and visit with the AJIN Corporation. A total of 14 educators will participate in the activity in 2011. Drs. John Dagley and Suhyun Suh will serve as coordinators.
