2012 Community Transition Expo: Preparing for Tomorrow – Today!
Making the transition from being a teenager to young adult can sometimes be challenging, and for youth with disabilities this time can be especially difficult. Auburn University is doing its part to lessen these challenges faced by youth and young adults with disabilities. The Collaborative Approach to Training Transition Specialists (CATTS) scholars from the Department of Special Education, Rehabilitation and Counseling, in collaboration with the Auburn Transition Leadership Institute (ATLI), are hosting a Community Transition Expo on October 25, 2012, designed to address transition concerns.
Over 250 area middle and high school age students with disabilities, their family members, and school personnel will fill Trinity United Methodist Church in Opelika, Alabama to hear from state agencies and transition specialists on what accommodations and benefits are available to these students during high school, and as these students prepare for life after secondary education.
Specifically, information will be shared about services and programs available to assist these students in postsecondary environments such as school, leisure, daily living, and employment. Agency and program representatives will explain their services through displays, handouts and informative sessions.
The following representatives from these services and programs will be in attendance:
Alabama Association for Persons in Supported Employment
Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services –Division of Vocational Rehabilitation
Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services- Division of Children’s Rehabilitation
