Counseling Psychology Program Achieves 100% Internship Placement - January 2013 Eight counseling psychology students applied for internship this year. All eight matched to APA-accredited internships. Program director, Dr. Annette Kluck, elaborates: "About 25% of all people applying will not get an internship. About 40% of people who apply (actually slightly more) will not get an APA-accredited internship so this is wonderful news for us." Thomas, Shippen and Curtis had research published in the Journal of Counseling and Development, the premier journal for the American Counseling Association. The research collaborative began in 2009, when the three began discussing the preparation and education of students (preservice teachers, counselors and rehabilitation providers) to work with persons with disabilities. The result has been two presentations (local and regional conferences) and one national publication. They hope to extend their research in coming years. Thomas, C. M., Curtis, R., & Shippen, M. Dr. James Werth, a 1995 graduate of the Counseling Psychology Ph.D. program, has been elected a Fellow of the Society of Counseling Psychology (Division 17 of the American Psychological Association). According to Dr. Randy Pipes, Werth's major professor at Auburn, "This is an honor which only a small percentage of psychologists attain; we are very proud of Dr. Werth." Election to Fellow status requires evidence of unusual and outstanding contributions or performance in the field of psychology. Fellow status requires that a person’s work have had a national impact on the field of psychology beyond a local, state, or regional level (http://www.apa.org/membership/fellows/process.aspx). In 2010, Dr. Werth was also awarded a Diplomate in Counseling Psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology. |
