Our Keystone Identity

Samford Arch 2When you think of symbols that represent education, teaching and learning, what do you think about? Do you see apples, school buses, books, pencils and paper? While all these objects pertain to education, they are mere parts of a bigger picture.

In 2002, the College of Education adopted the "keystone" as that symbol that illustrates the grander role of education in our society and our commitment, through all we do, to build better futures for all. According to Webster's Dictionary, a keystone is the "central, topmost stone of an arch" or "that one of a number of associated parts or things that supports or holds together the others."

The keystone, the topmost stone of an arch, serves as a visual reminder of our mission and our goals. Just as the keystone supports and holds an arch together, education holds intact the promise of a better future for all. We believe that education is the keystone of opportunity and equity in a richly diverse, increasingly technological, and ever-changing world. It is the critical building block that enables individuals and societies to flourish in a global community.
