History: Established in 1915, the College of Education celebrated its 90th anniversary during the 2005-2006 academic year. It is the sixth-oldest among the university's 12 schools and colleges.
Accreditation: The college is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), the country's most rigorous accrediting agency for schools of education. Many of our academic and professional programs hold accreditation or certification, or are distinguished, within their respective academic disciplines.
National Recognition: In 2011, U.S.News and World Report ranked the college's graduate programs as No. 71 nationally — in the top third of the schools of education surveyed. The Rehabilitation Counseling program in the college's Department of Special Education, Rehabilitation, and Counseling is currently ranked No. 17 nationally by U.S. News, and doctoral programs in the Department of Kinesiology are ranked No. 22 nationally by the National Academy of Kinesiology. The Department of Educational Foundations, Leadership, and Technology was ranked No. 7 nationally in 2007 by Academic Analytics for scholarly efforts by its faculty.
Academics: The college offers 23 bachelor's degrees and 37 graduate degrees through its four academic departments.
Distance Education: The College of Education continues to be a leader in distance education. The college's rehabilitation distance education programs were not only the first online programs at Auburn University, but within the field of rehabilitation in the nation. Today, the college offers six distance education programs leading to eight graduate degrees.
Study Abroad: The college offers international short-term service-learning excursions and semester-long teacher education internships to more than 16 countries and every continent but Antarctica!
Conceptual Framework: The college' Conceptual Framework outlines its tactics in molding our students into competent, committed and reflective professionals.
Student Enrollment: In fall 2011, the college enrolled 2,716 students: 1,834 undergraduate and 882 graduate students. The college traditionally hosts the largest graduate enrollment and fifth-largest undergraduate enrollment among Auburn University's 12 colleges and schools.
Most Popular Degree Programs: In fall 2011, the most popular undergraduate degree programs were elementary education, exercise science, early childhood education, general social science education, and English language arts education. The most popular graduate majors were administration of higher education, exercise science, adult education, collaborative teacher special education, and administration of elementary and secondary education.
Scholarships: In 2011, the college presented 153 undergraduate and graduate awards worth $310,000, marking the fifth consecutive year that the college provided scholarship aid in excess of $200,000.
Faculty: The college employs more than 120 faculty members — nearly 100 percent hold terminal degrees in their respective fields, and more than three-fourths are tenured. Among the faculty are 16 endowed professors and one alumni professor.
Research and Outreach: The college's externally funded research and outreach activities totaled more than $6.8 million in 2010-11. More than half of the college's faculty is involved in externally funded efforts.
Technological Resources: The Learning Resources Center, a resource and technology center, boasts an average of 40,000 student contacts each year. It offers one-on-one computing services for students, as well as mobile classroom and distance education technologies for faculty.
Donor Support: Contributions and pledges from faculty, staff, alumni, and friends through Auburn University's "It Begins at Auburn" $500-million comprehensive campaign, which concluded in March 2008, exceeded $14 million — surpassing the college's original $5.75 million campaign goal set at the campaign's start in 2001. Giving by college employees routinely approaches 100 percent as a result of the university's annual Faculty Staff Campaign.
Alumni: College of Education alumni now number more than 30,000 graduates who reside in all 50 states and 35 countries. The college's National Advisory Council, composed of college alumni and friends, provide guidance to the college's dean and staff.
