Laboratory:  Experimental Animal Physiology (5th ed.) by K. Ottis,  J.F. Pritchett, and L.C. Wit.

This course will be a discussion of membrane physiology, muscle physiology, neurophysiology, cardiovascular physiology, renal physiology, respiratory physiology, endocrinology, and digestive physiology.  I encourage you to think physiologically this quarter rather than just memorize mundane facts.  Please feel free to question me at any time about things you do not understand.  I look forward to an exciting and stimulating quarter.

The hourly exams and laboratory exam will be given at night.  This time should be viewed as make-up time for those weeks when no complete labs are scheduled.

Letter grades will be assigned on the basis of overall performance;  lab performance may influence borderline grades.  The following will be used to determine final grades:

Lecture tests will only include information from the lectures.  Pop quizzes will be given for bonus points; they are a great benefit if you are prepared.  Since these are bonus points, there is no make-up for pop quizzes.

I have posted several copies of old exams on the WEB (1, 2, 3, 4) .  Please feel free to use them at your convenience. Years of experience in questioning successful students has revealed that nothing will succeed in this course other than frequent study.  What you do the first three weeks is as important as what you do the last three weeks.  GET AN EARLY START.  Exams are demanding and difficult; you must be thoroughly familiar with the information to the point of being able to apply it.

At the Web site you will find handouts which contain contain a general outline of the particular section, any complicated figures and drawings, and suggested readings.  These handouts are not designed to be used as a replacement for notes and attendance, but rather are to be viewed as learning aids.  I encourage you to bring them to class with you as I will refer to them frequently in lecture.  I will also post my PowerPoint presentation on the WEB, but the outlines are a better in-class resource.

Any student requiring special help due to any disability should notify the instructor within the 1st week of class.
