The archivist may be an historian

or an administrator.

Should he/she be an educator?

MARK: Outreach and dealing with the public are important aspects of the job that are overlooked. Without support and use from the general public the archive cannot grow and thrive. The scholarly researcher needs to be shown how use the archive effectively and the general person off the street that is searching their family tree needs more help. The more the public knows about how to use the archive, the more they will be willing to support them. Yes the archivist should be a teacher of history, and research techniques.

JEFF: That is probably a matter of individual capabilities and skills. I am sure that some archivists would be wonderful educators, while others less proficient. More abstractly, archivists have a role to play in educating historians about their repositories as well as policy-makers about the vital role of the agency.
