In practical application, the Back Basic is rarely danced exactly as-is. Normally it is taken with a quarter turn (or more) over steps 2-4 in order to prepare another forward movement. Without the turn, the Back Basic puts the man in the awkward position of having to move blindly backwards for an extended period of time.


Promenade

Man Lady
Count Rhythm Men's Part Lead
1 2 S Left foot side & slightly forward in promenade position. Facing diagonal wall, traveling along line of dance. 1/8 turn to left between previous step and 1.
3  4 S Right foot forward & across in promenade position. Facing diagonal wall, traveling along line of dance. Begin to turn to right.
5 q Left foot side. 1/8 turn to right between 2-3.
6 q Right foot closes to left foot. End in closed position, facing wall.

Count Rhythm Woman's Part
1 2 S Right foot side & slightly forward in promenade position.
3  4 S Left foot forward & across in promenade position.
5 q Right foot side.
6 q Left foot closes to right foot.
