Call for Undergraduate Teaching Assistants for Spring 2012

Applications are due by 5 PM on Thursday, December 1.

Undergraduate Teaching Assistants (UTAs) are needed for the Auburn University General Biology Program for Spring Semester 2012.  We are seeking Junior and Senior level students that excelled in their general biology courses (Biol 1020 & 1030) and that have at least a 3.0 GPA overall.  Sophomores with an outstanding record will also be considered.  Those hired as UTAs will assist Graduate Teaching Assistants during the laboratories for Biol 1001, 1011, 1021, or 1031, doing such things as helping students with models, microscopes, and experiments; answering questions; and just being available around the room for students who need assistance.  Teaching in the General Biology labs can be an excellent review of material to help you prepare for exams such as the MCAT.

UTAs typically have a work commitment of 2-6 hours per week for the entire semester (General Biology lab sections are 2 hours each in duration).  On rare occasions, a student may ask for and receive an assignment of more than 6 hours per week.  The pay for teaching is minimum wage.

If you are selected to teach in Biology 1011 or 1031 labs this spring you will be required to attend a weekly lab training prep session (unless you have already attended prep sessions for the lab class that you will be teaching).  The prep sessions for Biol 1011 and Biol 1031 will be on Mondays, most likely 3-6 PM.  Prep sessions will not be paid time, but instead will be a graded course, BIOL 4970 Special Problems - Undergraduate Teaching (1 credit hour).  We will take care of getting UTAs registered for this course.  So, if you hope to teach Biol 1011 or 1031 labs and have not taught these labs before be certain that you have the prep times on Monday down as available in the schedule that you submit.  The Biology 1001 and 1021 labs will NOT have a prep session this spring, so those with prior teaching experience in those labs will be strongly preferred for those assignments.

Please fill out the form and return it by email to:

Electronic submission is required.  In your email please include “UTA” in the subject of your message, although if you need a question answered do NOT include “UTA” in the subject.  If you feel that you must turn in a paper copy also you can slide it under the door to 347 Funchess Hall, but it will not be considered unless you send an email copy as well.

Note that competition for some times is very keen.  The more times that you are available, the better your likelihood of getting a slot to teach.

Applications are due by 5 PM on Thursday, December 1.  An emailing list of all applicants will be established, and those on the list will be sent general status updates during the selection process.  We will start making selections as early as December 2.  We will contact you as soon as possible after selections are made.  BE SURE TO INCLUDE A PHONE NUMBER OR NUMBERS WHERE WE CAN REACH YOU FROM DECEMBER 2 ON.

Thank you,
