NOTES ABOUT THE BIOL 1031 LAB FINAL

Lab finals will be given the last day of labs (July 28) in your regularly scheduled lab room at your regularly scheduled lab time!

The lab final will have 50 questions and is worth 150 points.  The questions will be on material from labs 7-12.  The format will be similar to the first practical (some stations, some slides).

For the animal classification labs (7-9), focus on phylum, subphylum, and class level identification; where these groups fit in higher levels of classification (Radiate, Bilateria, protostomes, etc.) and how the groups are related to each other; where given, body cavity information for these groups (acoelomate, pseudocoelomate, coelomate) as well as digestive tract information (complete or incomplete); symmetry information (asymmetrical, bilateral, radial, pentamerous radial); all of the bolded terms in the manual associated with each of the groups; and ESPECIALLY items labeled in figures.

The kinds of questions you saw on exit quizzes are a good guide for what to expect, but there will be a greater emphasis on identification of specimens by phylum, subphylum, or class.

The exit activity for Lab 9 should also be useful for you.  Essentially, any animal that you have seen in labs 7-12 could show up in an identification question where you are asked something like “This organism belongs to which phylum [or subphylum, or class]?”

The exit activities for Labs 10, 11, and 12 give you a focused set of terms/structures and concepts to know for the final.

The summary and review questions at the end of each lab are also excellent for preparing for the final

MISSED AND ACCOMMODATED LAB FINALS

If you have testing accommodations from the PSD office email me ASAP to set up your accommodated lab final (it will also be on July 28).  In your email tell me all times that you will be available to take your lab final on July 28.  Email me about this no later than Tuesday, July 19.

With summer lecture final exams starting on Monday, August 1, there effectively will be no opportunities to give makeups for the lab final.  If you have a documented excuse for missing your scheduled lab final but can attend the other section (section starting times are 1:30pm and 3:30pm; tests take a bit less than 1 hr) then do so.  Also email me (bowlisa@auburn.edu) BEFORE you take your lab final if you will be doing it with the other section.  You must have explicit permission from me or have a documented excuse that fits the excuse policies in the Tiger Cub for your test to count if you take it with the other section time.

If you miss your lab final and have a documented excuse that fits the excuse policies in the Tiger Cub you must email me no later than 5pm on Saturday, July 30, and let me know that you missed your final and have an excuse.  Your excuse needs to be turned in to 210 SCL (near the lab rooms) following the normal lab excuse procedures as detailed in your lab syllabus, except the deadline for turning in excuses is moved up to noon on Monday, August 1st.  NO EXCUSE means you will get a ZERO for the exam.  If you turn in an excuse and you were not able to take your exam with the other section on July 28 then your score on the first lab practical will also be used as your score for the lab final for the purposes of determining total lab points for the semester.
