BSC 314 - REINFORCED CONCRETE - SYLLABUS

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

 CLASS PROCEDURES:

Class sessions will consist of discussion, demonstration and problem solving. Students are encouraged to attend class and participate actively. Please consider others by arriving on time. Food and drink are not allowed in the classroom; tobacco products are not allowed in the building.
 

EQUIPMENT:

Bring your textbook to class! You will also need engineering(grid) paper, pencil, and scientific calculator for most class sessions.

 
CLASS PARTICIPATION:

Attendance is particularly important regarding communication of homework, test, and group construction project information. Your participation in class sessions involves you in the process of learning the course material. Attendance at filed trips, project presentations, tests is mandatory.

Instructor will keep a record of daily attendance. You will be considered present only if you sign the roll sheet as it is circulated. Instructor will call on each student to encourage your participation.
 

CONSTRUCTION PROJECT:

You will be required to work in a group with 3 or 4 other students to plan and construct a small concrete structure. Projects will be graded on degree of difficulty, craftsmanship, and quality of written and verbal communication. Details of the construction project are specified in another document.

 
HOMEWORK:

Homework will be assigned regularly, collected and graded. Homework will be a mix of computational problem solving and small group construction assignments. Computations must be communicated in a professional manner. Homwork will be graded on the basis of correctness, completeness, format and neatness. Construction assignments will be graded on the basis of functionality, workmanship, and design.
 

TESTING:

There will be regularly scheduled tests and a comprehensive 2½ hour final exam (see schedule). Tests are closed book, and must be taken at the scheduled time. There will be no exceptions and no make-up tests (except in cases of dire emergency). Tests will be graded, returned and recollected in class.
