Symbiodinium (SYM) Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST)

Welcome to The Santos Lab implementation of the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) (Altschul et al. 1990, Journal of Molecular Biology 215:403-410) from NCBI. If you are unfamiliar with BLAST, click on the "?" button (upper right-hand corner) of the SYM-BLAST web page (link below) for a tutorial on the program(s). The databases utilized in these BLAST searches are Symbiodinium and/or dinoflagellate-specific and updated on a monthly basis. The databases are constructed from all Symbiodinium/dinoflagellate sequences available from NCBI at the beginning of each month.  These searches are being run at the AU Dept. of Biological Sciences on an Apple G5 14-processor computer cluster affectionately known as GUMP (Genomics Using Multiple Processors). Thus, once a search is started, results are returned nearly immediately. In addition, the results are dynamically linked to their original accessions at NCBI (a.k.a. GenBank).

As of Dec. 2008, the number of sequences in the databases are:

Symbiodinium (nucleotide):

23,614

Dinoflagellate (nucleotide):

135,721

Symbiodinium (amino acid):

267

Dinoflagellate (amino acid):

2,561
